Asbestos is a group of minerals that have been used in building materials over time due to its tensile strength, resistance to heat, electricity, and corrosion. Asbestos is also known to be the primary cause of cancer called mesothelioma. When fibers are inhaled during a disturbance of a friable form of asbestos, they can become trapped in the pleural lining of the lungs. Over time, the irritation caused by these thin needle-like fibers can cause asbestosis or in the worst cases, mesothelioma.
It is not only recommended but required by law to have building materials that may contain asbestos to be tested to verify that they don’t contain asbestos before demolition. Building materials that commonly contain asbestos (especially in structures built before 1980) are drywall joint compounds, plasters, vinyl flooring, mastics (glues), caulks, pipe insulation, fireproofing materials, and roofing materials. Illegal removal of asbestos can result in heavy fines, lawsuits, and criminal charges that may result in prison time. Before performing demolition, renovation or construction, let Abby-Owen Environmental test the materials being removed to verify that they do not contain this harmful material.
